REBUILDING EAST TIMOR -- "After declaring independence 2 years ago [1999], East Timor was nearly burned to the ground by militias. Now it's on the rebound, and will hold its first free elections in hundreds of years." (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS) This article examines the efforts by the United Nations and the people of East Timor to rebuild the country two years after voting for independence from Indonesia. EAST TIMOR VOTES PEACEFULLY -- This article describes the voting atmosphere of the East Timor people who will vote on Aug. 30, 2001 for an assembly to draft a constitution for their fledging country. "The vote for the assembly by East Timor's 425,000 eligible voters will set the province on the road to nationhood after three centuries of Portuguese colonial rule, 24 years of Indonesian military occupation, and two years of transitional U.N. administration."
