MINORITY, NOT MINOR -- "As in countries around the world, Taiwan's indigenous peoples have endured oppression and discrimination, and they were stripped of many of their land rights. But a series of high profile protests in the 1980s have led to greater public awareness and sensitivity, and enlightened legislation." (TAIPEI REVIEW) This article analyzes the struggle by indigenous peoples in Taiwan to preserve their ethnic identity and culture as well as achieve social equality. THE TALE OF TAIWAN'S ABORIGINES -- A recent court ruling returning land taken by the government "as a major victory for the island's aboriginal population after years of suppression, neglect and forced assimilation by the dominant ethnic Chinese society" (LOS ANGELES TIMES). This article examines the struggle by Taiwan's aboriginal population to reclaim their land and restore their ethnic identity after years of injustice.
