"There is a consensus in the United States that a key ingredient of maintaining a good society is involving Americans in service to something greater than themselves. The Founding Fathers believed it. Indeed, many of them sacrificed their lives--and, most of them, their wealth--for the greater cause of America's independence and nationhood." (WORLD & I) The author defines public service, suggests that "every American has the capacity and opportunity to serve something greater than self" and opines that the challenge is to build a better society "without expanding the size and scope of government any further."
