"One day in the early 1970s, Robert Whitman conducted a gruesome experiment at the dusty old factory where he worked in Passaic. With a bit of food, he captured four mice in a bucket and sprayed them with the vinyl chloride gas used at the plant to make plastics. A white cloud settled at the bottom of the pail. Whitman and three co-workers bent over to watch. The mice struggled, then froze. Word of their fate passed through the factory."
