Summary, etc. |
"Toughman competitions, the popular organized brawls in which untrained fighters flail and pummel each other, have made the founder of the contests a millionaire while leaving some participants disfigured, brain damaged or dead....The sport's fatality rate is more than quadruple that of organized amateur boxing, a Detroit News investigation found. And the sport's deadliness is directly linked to its loose rules and lack of regulation, critics and supporters agree." (DETROIT NEWS) This article examines Toughman competitions and reveals how loose regulations allow unlicensed fighters without background checks and thorough physicals, referees who often are inexperienced and doctors who lack training in fight injuries, all of which have caused serious injuries and deaths many claim could have been prevented. |
