"The first challenge is realizing that despite the intertwining of religious and political issues in Northern Ireland, the American description of the conflict as 'Catholic versus Protestant' is a misnomer. It is as inaccurate as if coverage of the Middle East were reported entirely as 'Jews and Muslims.' A prayer to Yahweh or Allah does not change that it's a political war. So it is in Northern Ireland. The war is not 'Catholic versus Protestant.' It is, rather, 'Nationalist versus Unionist.'" (NATIONAL CATHOLIC REPORTER) The author opines that there is a misconception about the conflict in Ireland, which she wishes to clarify through her discussion of the political issues behind the conflict. |
