"Seconds after the morning-break bell rings at Hoover Middle School in San Jose, Calif., students begin lining up at the three soda machines locked inside black mesh cages on the quad. One by one, they stuff a dollar bill or handful of change into a machine and wait for a 20-ounce Pepsi or Mountain Dew to bump down the chute. In minutes the quad is filled with adolescents strolling along sidewalks, sitting on benches or sprawled on the grass with a soft drink in hand....Similar scenes play out daily at middle and high schools across the nation, where soda and a bag of chips have become the meal of choice for a generation brought up on fast food."
